E-waste as a global problem&#38;nbsp;Each day thousands of new products are launched in the market, turning older ones obsolete. The life span of devices is getting shorter and shorter. Many of these devices are rarely used before they are discarded. As a result, more and more unnecessary e-waste is reaching landfills leading to an increasing amount of toxic chemicals in soil, water, and air. This is especially true for household electronic appliances.&#38;nbsp;

Shared products are often troubled by the issue that people don’t take good care of them, which is especially problematic when the hardware is not designed for sharing.

Concept

E-magine is a service that enables neighbors to responsibly share seldom used home appliances while incentivizing them to take well care of the devices.The E-magine service comprises of 3 things -&#38;nbsp;device assistants, an app, and&#38;nbsp;a buyback program:


	1. Device assistants will:
- give instructions on how do you use and maintain it;
- react to the way you treat it thus ensuring you take appropriate care;
- remind you of the expiration of your rental period;

The assistant comes in the form of a robot attached to the plug of the device. The design of the assistant is meant to create an emotional link between the shared appliance and the user. It communicates via sound and slight movements of its head and LED-powered “eyes”.

Preparation
We started our research from looking at the topic about electronic waste, in both global and local scale. After doing some secondary research, we locked our eyes into home appliances and how might we design to help replace ownership with sharing service with these products to reduce the waste. Synthesizing
Coming back from the field, we downloaded our data and made affinity mapping. The insights were:1. It is necessary to integrate a mechanism to protect sharing appliances and enable it to work2. Reminders should not be too “hot” to make people feel bothered3. The emotional attachment could help incentivize sense of care on the sharing of home appliances 
These insights helped us reconfigure our concept and moved onto overall experience prototyping.

	We decided to apply the insights we gathered into our design by using a video sketch to frame different touchpoints across the whole experience. Light and monotone sounds were used as notification cues, and basic app screen wireframes were built in the scenario.

Overview


	
Goal&#38;nbsp;The goal of the research is to help define a vision for Diatel's new venture. And the new venture will help Diatel to differentiate from the competitors and also better serve the needs of diabetics in the U.S.

Current Status

They are thinking about a digital product/service in relation to the telemedicine, and need to envision what their product could/should be.

Who should be involved: Product, marketing and operation team should be involved. But most importantly, the product team needs to set up their time for this research project.

During the Discover phase, the team will go through three actions: 1.&#38;nbsp;Lens-based market trend research; 2.&#38;nbsp;Customer research; 3. Opportunity and idea generations workshop.


	Act 1:&#38;nbsp;Lens-based market trend research During this step, through expert interviews and desk reviews, the team will look into the field of telemedicine with various lenses: Economical, Technological, Social, Legal, Medical and Ethical. 	Act 2: Customer research During this step, the team will conduct 8-12 in-depth customer interviews to get a contextual understanding about their needs and challenges. 	Background


	With poverty being one of the greatest global challenges the world faces, the team decided to search for ways to design a better solution to address this issue. This led to the creation of Cadeau, a motivational app that helps donors track their clothing donations in a rewarding way.

	What is Cadeau?

	Cadeau makes giving more transparent as donors can track the full journey of where their clothing donations go and see the positive impact they have made to those in need.

	How does Cadeau work?

	Donors are given a tracking code to add to his or her donation bag each time they make a donation. The app then provides a nearest drop-off location for donations to be dropped off. The user interface includes guidelines for the donation process, together with a record and visualization of past donations. Graphics are placed in line with a short text explaining each step (e.g., donation requirements, how to enable tracking, and where donations can be dropped off). Visualization and history of past donations offer donors feedback on their total donations to date, the stage in which their donations are at, and who they have ultimately helped.

Context

Denmark is not a traditionally immigrant country, and expats are often met with difficulties of settiling in. The situation is even more challenging when it comes to expats with children.&#38;nbsp; In this project, together with my two classmates at CIID, we decided to investigate on how might we help expat parents in Copenhagen to settle in.

Process
	During the three-week service design course, with the aim of helping expat parents in Copenhagen increase their social capital, our project went from problem scoping, to extensive research, to iterative prototyping, and in the end, we brought the design into the real life to test.

	Insights:

With the interviews, we have gained two insights:1. Just arriving into the country is the most stressful moment throughout the whole expat journey.
According to our field research, typically, an expat will experience stress at four different stages of the expat journey, and the most stressful moments happened when they first arrived at the new country without any local support. 
2. People who have experience as expat are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and want to help people in the similar situation.

Working with Expat Helpline

	
Reena was both an expat who has been through all the challenges adapting to Copenhagen, also, she is an active contributor to the expat community: along with her husband and another expat family, they created an Expat Helpline that aims to help with challenges expat families face in the beginning.We found Reena through a Facebook post. Reena’s enthusiasm and passion for the helpline moved us, and we decided to join forces with her and helped her provide service to expats she has envisioned.

From the co-creation session, we had four notable insights:
1. Expat Helpline is a voluntary service that provides childhood options to expat parents in a positive way;2. The service should grow organically: she did not want an overnight sensation;3. The service should maintain consistency on the provided information and a positive tone of voice;4. In the future, the service should be accessible for volunteers and expat parents outside Copenhagen too.

	
	

	

Iterative Prototyping

	The gathered insights guided on us to focus more on the service provider side of the design. 
How can we design to support organic growth while maintaining a consistent tone of voice?We decided to assemble a volunteer toolkit quickly and went straight to bodystorming with our classmate. The volunteer toolkit is a box that contained one call log, one calling protocol paper, one information collection book, one Expat Helpline logo, one “phone” and one “charger”.
During the bodystorming, we understood what service would be helpful for a new volunteer without prior knowledge of the service. Combining advice from our teachers, we decided to create a roadmap to envision what service can be implemented at the current stage and in the near future. And in considerations of feasibility and to meet different needs at different stages, we used different technology to prototype: Google Excelsheet would be sufficient while a more integrated digital platform will meet an evergrowing demand from both users and service providers` side.

Concept
How do you design to improve the current service?
In estimation, there will be two more families joining the volunteer service in the upcoming months. To better onboard the new volunteers and keep track of the calling history, we created a volunteer toolkit for them based on Google Excel Sheet.

How does Volunteer Toolkit work?
Volunteers can open the toolkit from one shared Google Excel file. By clicking on different tabs, they can access answering protocol and information about different childhood options, input call logs, and also make updates on all these relevant information within the same platform.

	What do you envision the future of Expat Helpline?
We envision the service will grow and there will be more members involved. Massive information flow will make the service hard to maintain consistency with simple tools like Excel sheets. The geological expansion of the volunteer group will make the physical phone inaccessible.

How can we design to support the organic growth of Expat Helpline to face these challenges? 
We envisionan all-service digital platform that integrates the previous functions and expands its capacity. 









The digital platform will be in the form of a desktop app. Volunteers in the front line will use it to schedule the time, answer the call, update information as well as connect. 
At the backstage, Reena`s family and another founder family will be working in the management. And also, there will be technical support to maintain the running of the platform.

	During the test, many parents showed their interest in joining the expat helpline, and our toolkit received several feedbacks, in terms of the classifications of the information and what would be the best way to involve the new volunteers in the feedback session.&#38;nbsp;
